1. INTRODUCTION

1. FOREWORD

On 9 and 10 October last took place the VII Forum of the International Federation of Daseinsanalyse, organized by the Belgian Centre and School of Daseinsanalyse. This was an opportunity for all world delegates to gather in Brussels for the first time.

The forum was a fine success : friendly atmosphere, sound lectures and competent speakers. Our only regret is that the Belgian and French audience was no larger than it usually is at these gatherings.

Our special thanks go to Dr. Gion Fidel Condrau for the latitude we had in organising the forum, to Pr. Paul Jonckheere for endorsing the honor presidency and for his kind attentions, to Ms Véronique Salik for rental and transport of the piano, to Dr Bruno Verrecchia for sharing with us his talent for music on top of his professional competences, to all the speakers for their quality lectures, to Cécile for her presence and secretarial work.

Our sincere congratulations go to Dr. Constantin GEMENETZIS for his appointment as president (2009-2012) of the International Federation of Daseinsanalyse.

Below you will find the programme of the forum. When clicking on the name of a speaker, you will be directed to his lecture.

Looking forward to meeting you again in Greece in 2015,

Dr. Ado HUYGENS
President of the Forum and Belgian Center and School of Daseinsanalyse
Vice-president of the International Federation of Daseinsanalyse

"Finnishness as a soulscape revisited. A mind journey into space, time and humanity": Full text EN

Abstracts :
Dawn, daybreak, refers to freshness, to novelty, to the state of being new: to a moment when something is still constructing its own beginning. The inner universe of the travelogue – or, rather, travelogues – becomes an existential cord plaited from the strands of lived time, lived space, lived body, and the lived other. Somewhere in the background there is music, the resounding refrain of the modern world.

Time is young, as is the mind-person. The present is sought fervidly, deliriously. Beauty is adored, an aesthetic lifestyle is pursued. The 1920’s with their Torchbearers [Finnish: Tulenkantajat] group and machine romanticism emerge as a counter-echo to the deathly whisper of weapons of the previous decade. The 1930’s bask in the sun of bodyliness, the proud extolment of the physical. A brave new millenium rises, and suddenly being starts with the number two. Virtuality, artificial reality, awakens into its full glory. Meanwhile beauty, machine aesthetics and bodyliness breathe on with vigour.

During the existential onward journey, the travelogue fills with diary entries of the observer. The story develops into a dialogue in which the philosopher and the living person take turns in speaking words on being. The observer sketches an image of the Finnish soulscape with the aid of literature and photographs. He also ponders the idea of national ethos: bolstered by patriotic spirit, Finland’s Marshal Mannerheim rides towards new futures in front of the Museum of Modern Art, Kiasma [in Helsinki]. Memories that span over generations are relentlessly present.

How can one analyse a past that has dug deep chasms between people? Can they be bridged even now? Or will new presents be filled unendingly with the sounds of pain-inflicting pasts? If the researcher claims to have found the truth, who is the deceiver and the deceived: the researcher himself, his readers or listeners?

Perhaps the answer lies in the spirit of the Finnish Winter War, and humility has a tinge of the sublime. Thus, it is time to make an existential discovery: when human beings are faithful to their own essence, their days will be filled with a sense of personal strength. Living, however modest, fills us with happiness, with the sparkle of brilliant days. Abundance leads us to forget our essential core: the workaday spills over from plentiness and chases away the pure strength of being. Human being, reach out for quality. Shun quantity. Enjoy the insignificant. Care not about plenty. Then you will no longer stand in the vestibule of your own life. You will be in the very midst of it, beneath the open sky. This is your testament, human being. See, live, be. No more is needed. Your work is done. Peace be with you.

"Community and group Daseins analysis." : Full text EN

Abstracts :
The author maintains that the soil on which a person stands and from which it grows is culture. Human existence itself is culture. Therefore psychotherapy is specifically efficient in its context; the relevant theme being ‘togetherness’. This doesn’t happen in people’s heads and neither is it some alienated abstraction. It must be done within the themes of work, love and struggle. From this also derives the meaning and working of community and group psychotherapy. Czech psychotherapists created a Czech modality of daseins-analytically oriented community group psychotherapy. Under ‘community’ they understand a natural human partnership within which group psychotherapy is organized and carried. This natural community partnership doesn’t only perform group therapy but also opens way to other opportunities arising from it. The community group psychotherapeutic modality is not only meaningfully applied in treating so called mental and psychosomatic disorders, but is appropriately adjusted for the training of psychotherapists and the education of students in other helping professions. The author describes and explains its basic characteristics.

"Globalisation – a possibility of finding oneself. ": Full text EN

Abstracts :
The elucidation of the human being’s basic structures is one of the preconditions preceding the immediate taking-in of that which shows itself to us. This clarification requires a phenomenological vision of the essence, which perfuses empiricism. Phenomenology, the method of Daseinsanalysis, is a Being-open for the miracle of our world, which stretches out in the vastness between heaven and earth. Two case studies.

Abstracts :
The lecture deals with the problem that the so-called mentally ill people do not have a free relationship with their feelings. This lack limits their contacts with their existential possibilities. What is investigated is the complicated connection between the existential atonement on one side, and the feelings on the other side. The sense of feeling is seen to be the information about the fulfilment of the individual’s own possibility of authentic existence. The concrete procedure of therapy with regard to feelings is introduced. The paper emphasises the positive influence of group setting on the therapy of feelings. Work with feelings in daseinsanalysis is not conceived as a technique.

"On having nothing to lose : Commodification, Daseins-icide and the lethal and liberating possibilities of “choosing-not-to-be-of-any-value” among children and adolescents": Full text EN

Abstracts :
This presentation will address Dasein-icide, or Dasein’s killing of itself in
the Das Mann-ish commodification of childlikeness-in-the-world. I will argue that this ontological event-ing gives rise to the ontic gesturing, attempting, and/or completing of suicide among children and adolescents. After describing the phenomenology of this ontological event-ing, I will argue that becoming aware of and engaging both the potentially lethal and liberating co-constituted possibilities of “choosing-not-to-be-of-any-value” may clear space toward meaningful transcendence within existence beyond the more narrowed constriction of transcendence via the termination of existence. I close with therapeutic possibilities of “being-with” children and adolescents in their “whatever-ness” that neither “leaps in,” nor “leaps ahead,” but “walks with” through the gravity of deliverance.

“Les fondements de la Daseinsanalyse : à propos des séminaires de Zollikon ou comment la pensée de Heidegger a rencontré la psychiatrie et la médecine.” : Full text FR

Abstracts :
The protocols of the Zollikon Seminars are an outstanding testimony regarding the story of the phenomenological thought and practice. Coached by Martin Heidegger and Médard Boss, these seminars gathered young medical doctors and psychiatrists for many years. The purpose was to allow an alternative way of thinking about the human being and his world, putting aside the usual way of thinking of the science of nature. These protocols appear as a work in progress where the foundations of the Da-seinanalysis show themselves through the phenomenological questionning.
The claim of the modern science leads to the sciences’blindness to phenomena. The method of modern science was first anticipated by Descartes, as securing the calculability of nature. Instead of the « I-think » way of a mere self-contained subjectivity , we are invited to another way of being, that is the daseinanalytical one. The Daseinanalysis is based on Martin Heidegger’s ontology, on his hermeneutic-phenomenological view of human being’s existence as the aerea of openess of Dasein to what it encounters.

"Taking the lead from Sophokles’Oedipuse": Full text EN

Abstracts :
This paper attempts to examine how Oedipus faced his fate (moira), and how this understanding can enlighten Existential Psychotherapy and the Problem of Being.

Generally speaking, the demand for treatment aims at a solution. Human beings want to rid themselves of problems, to consider themselves functional and productive. This is of central importance for modern man.

This seems to be achievable for Oedipus. Yet, the one who achieves that, is the one Oedipus would like to be, the one Oedipus has tried to be, rather than Oedipus himself. Therefore, if the treatment of Oedipus were the 'solution to the problem', then this treatment was rather devastating, it was an ill health as this led him to a greater loss of himself. The smooth flow which was achieved against any disturbance and disorder is total disorder. A victory that was a defeat - power that eliminated the powerful. The seer Teiresias suggests another model of reasoning which will affect Oedipus, making him confront his oblivion and his depressed illness, the illness of a fake identity, the illness of a false self... Where is therefore himself, where is the truth about his person, and how can he get there?

"Psychotherapy in the footsteps of Homer’s Ulysses": Full text EN

Abstracts :
This paper attempts, through a close reading of the Homeric classic epic poem Ulysses, to examine the way in which the wondering hero Ulysses tried to discover his identity and give meaning to his life. Psychotherapy is concerned with this very wondering of human existence and the need for its understanding.

As we know, Ulysses had the opportunity to stay in the island of Calypso (Calypso, deriving in greek from καλύπτω, which means to hide, to cover up) and gain immortality having to pay however the price of losing his identity.

Instead, he chose to return to Ithaca: in other words, he chose mortality, a (honourable) death- telos to his life and ultimately gaining a biography. As Heidegger writes in Sein und Zeit: "Death is a possibility of Being that each Dasein must itself take over. With death Dasein stands before itself in its most proper potentiality for being"

When inquiring into the meaning of dream phenomena one soon realizes that with all the manifold significances, some of them even controversial, every consistency easily can get lost. It is necessary to narrow down the great variety of references in order to attain the specific meaning which concerns the dreamer. For this we need a guideline. Medard Boss has to be acknowledged for discouvering mood as this guideline. It is however crucial how we understand the significance of mood. With help of a dream example two different ways of interpretation, corresponding to two different concepts of mood, are discussed. It is pointed out that these different interpretatons necessarily lead to different therapeutic applications.
